Omar Pereira

Founder & Head Investor Coach

Omar Pereira is Atlantis’ Founder and Head Investor Coach. He founded Atlantis in 2007.

Omar earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of New Orleans.

The source of Atlantis’ reason to exist, its mission, and its vision is Omar’s purpose in life: inspiring others to live extraordinary lives.

That purpose inspires him to wake up every day looking forward to having conversations with families that request his coaching.

He is a relentless stand for helping families dwell in a world driven by their true purpose in life, with a commitment to achieving peace of mind around their money and investments.

Omar is married to Cynthia, and they had three sons, the youngest of which died in a tragic incident in 2011.

That experience reinforced Omar’s stand for families, inspiring them to live lives of freedom, fulfillment, and love, and to experience that life in the NOW instead of the “someday when…” He believes that life can be too short to waste on anything other than your true purpose.

Cynthia and Omar enjoy traveling worldwide and have visited over 50 countries. They love meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds and making new friends.

Traveling is the primary way Omar practices his favorite hobby: learning languages. He speaks fluent English and Spanish, is proficient in Brazilian Portuguese and French, and can manage and understand conversations in Italian and German. And if you give him a text in Finnish, he’ll read it with very good pronunciation – just don’t ask him to tell you what it means!

Omar’s professional career started in the automotive industry at General Motors (GM), where he worked for 14 years.

In July 2001, in the middle of a career move that required Cynthia and him to move from Rochester, NY, to Dublin, Ireland, their first son was born with significant health issues. That situation made Omar reconsider whether he could successfully raise a family and live a life worth living while at GM.

He decided it was time to leave GM and return to his hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico, become an entrepreneur, and start a new career in financial services, doing what he used to do as a hobby.

He started in the Financial Services industry in 2002 working as a registered representative for Jefferson Pilot Securities, a securities broker/dealer, and as an insurance agent with Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance Company.

Over the next few years, Omar discovered why many advisors have dysfunctional client relationships.

The investment industry’s compensation model often rewards advisors more for bringing in new clients but provides little to no compensation for maintaining existing clients. That’s why many advisors do not focus on their existing clients unless it’s to switch them to a new and “improved” investment product that generates them a new commission, or to find out if their client has more money to invest.

Omar thought that one of the critical values he provided to his clients was his investing expertise and access to investment research tools. He spent long hours putting together diversified portfolios of mutual funds that had outstanding track records for long periods.

But after a few years, those 4- and 5-star mutual funds he recommended to his clients ended up becoming 2- and 3-star funds, underperforming most other funds and the market.

He felt he wasn’t really helping his clients like he wanted to. That prompted Omar to look for a way to invest that worked.

In October, 2006, Omar met Mark Matson, CEO of Matson Money. Within the first hour of that meeting, Mark showed him academic research and overwhelming scientific evidence which asserted Mark’s belief that no one can stock pick, market time, or track-record invest consistently and predictably. Worst yet, the industry often promotes the myth that THEY can do it because the more people trade, the higher their profits can be.

After that meeting, Omar realized that he was was not adequately serving his clients, and immediately decided to change the way he conducted business.

Since then, Omar has dedicated his life to improving his skills as an investor coach, including mastering his understanding of the academic principles behind the science of investing and human behavior. To this end, he devotes over 500 hours of education and practice per year.
